Tarot Reading Guide

From the basics for first-timers to tips for reading spreads in more depth.

What is tarot?

Tarot is a system of symbols carried by 78 illustrated cards. It began as a European card game in the fifteenth century and is now used around the world as a tool for self-reflection, meditation, and counseling. The most widely used interpretive tradition today is based on the Rider-Waite deck, created in 1909, and Starlight Tarot's interpretations follow that tradition.

Tarot is not a tool that "fixes" the future and reports it back. It is closer to a mirror: the cards' symbols reflect where your heart is right now, and which possibilities you may be overlooking. That is why the same card can read completely differently depending on the question and the situation.

Major Arcana and Minor Arcana

The 78 cards divide into two groups.

You can look up the meaning of every single card in the card meanings dictionary.

Good questions make good readings

The most important thing in tarot is not the cards but the question. Vague questions get vague answers; specific questions return specific insight.

How to read each spread

One Card โ€” today's message

The simplest and most frequently used layout. It is great for starting the day with "What attitude do I need today?" or for a hint on a simple question. With only one card there is little interpretive burden, making it the best fit for beginners. Try connecting the card's keywords to the scenes of your day.

Three Cards โ€” past ยท present ยท future

Three cards tell one story. Past shows the roots of the current situation, Present the energy at work right now, and Future the direction things will take if the current flow continues. If you don't like the future card, read it not as "sealed fate" but as a signal to change the current now. Rather than reading the three cards separately, connect them into a single sentence flowing from past to future.

Celtic Cross โ€” deep insight in 10 cards

The most famous traditional spread, used to examine a complex situation from every side. Starlight Tarot's Celtic Cross uses these ten positions:

  1. Present Situation โ€” the energy at the heart of the question
  2. Challenge โ€” what blocks or provokes you right now
  3. Subconscious ยท Foundation โ€” the roots of the situation, motives you aren't aware of
  4. Recent Past โ€” the recent currents that created this situation
  5. Goal ยท Best Outcome โ€” what you consciously hope for, the best you can reach
  6. Near Future โ€” the next scene, coming soon
  7. Yourself โ€” your attitude and state as you face this situation
  8. External Influences โ€” the people around you and outside forces
  9. Hopes & Fears โ€” what you secretly wish for and dread (often the same thing)
  10. Final Outcome โ€” where the current flow leads in the end

Don't try to read all ten at once. Group them โ€” 1ยท2 (situation and obstacle) โ†’ 3ยท4 (roots and past) โ†’ 5ยท6 (direction) โ†’ 7โ€“9 (you and your surroundings) โ†’ 10 (conclusion) โ€” and the story connects naturally.

Upright and reversed

Cards that appear upside down โ€” reversals โ€” are the part beginners struggle with most, but the principle is simple. A reversal is upright energy that is blocked, excessive, or turned inward.

So a reversal is not always bad news. The reversal of a difficult card can even be a sign of recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Should I believe tarot results?

Tarot is a tool of symbols and reflection, not statistics or science. Treat Starlight Tarot's results as material for fun and self-understanding, and always base important decisions โ€” health, legal, financial โ€” on your own judgment and professional advice.

How many readings a day are okay?

There is no limit, but slowly digesting one reading means more than redrawing the same question again and again. If the topics are different, several readings a day are fine.

Does it matter that I pick the cards myself instead of being dealt them?

At Starlight Tarot you pick your own cards from a freshly shuffled deck of 78. Whichever card you choose is chance either way โ€” but the feeling of "I chose this with my own hand" gives you a reason to look deeper into the result.

Is my question stored anywhere?

No. Your question and results are never sent to a server; they are processed entirely inside your browser and disappear when you close the page. See the privacy policy for details.
